Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP) is the biggest teaching hospital in Europe, federating 38 different hospitals and groups of hospitals (22,474 beds) mainly located in Paris and its suburban area. It offers advanced treatments to 8M patients per year, including 1.5M hospitalisations (10% of all hospitalisations in France).

As a public health institution, AP-HP pursues 3 main missions: healthcare delivery, medical and paramedical teaching and biomedical and clinical research. AP-HP teams develop high-quality research activities, including European and International Research projects. In particular, AP-HP is involved and/or co-ordinates more than 100 European research projects supported by the Research and Technological Development Research Program from the European Union. AP-HP is also the first biomedical research centre in Europe with > 500 clinical trials per year and > 8,000 publications per year (25% of all medical research publications in France).

APHP is the coordinator of the project and sponsor of the clinical study. The sponsor will be responsible of the general management and will check that the cohort study is conducted in accordance with European and National regulations and guidelines.

The European Clinical Research Infrastructure Network (ECRIN), facilitates multinational clinical research, through the provision of advice and services for the set-up and management of investigator or SME-led clinical studies in Europe. ECRIN unites national networks of clinical trial units across Europe, through its scientific partners, to fulfill its vision of generating scientific evidence to optimise medical practice.

Regulatory and ethical approval and follow-up are led by ECRIN with the participation of AP-HP. This task ensures that all national and international regulatory and ethical requirements are fulfilled before the clinical cohort initiation (i.e., approval by regulatory authorities, independent ethics committees and other appropriate authorities (data protection, etc.) and registration in clinical studies databases (clinicaltrials.gov, etc.).

The University of Luxembourg, founded in 2003 as the first and only public university in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, is an international research university with a distinctly multilingual and interdisciplinary character. In 2009, it established its second interdisciplinary centre, the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB). The LCSB is accelerating biomedical research by closing the link between systems biology and medical research.

LCSB hosts the ELIXIR Luxembourg Node (ELIXIR-LU) focusing on the long-term sustainability of tools and data for translational medicine. ELIXIR-LU aims to “give life” to data for translational medicine, the combination of the clinical and experimental environment. This means optimising the value gained from such data by improving usability and giving them sustainability. As part of this, ELIXIR-LU has established a data hub for translational medicine data to provide controlled access in compliance with the GDPR as a service to the research community. ELIXIR-LU has developed various tools in GDPR-compliant data management and engages strongly in the implementation of ethical principles and data protection concepts in the sharing of sensitive personal data.

The European Foundation for the Study of Chronic Liver Failure (EF CLIF) is a private non-profit organisation connecting biomedical researchers and healthcare professionals with each other, with patients and patient associations, and with society. The fundamental purpose of EF CLIF, reflected in its founding Statements of 2015, is to advance knowledge and promote research and education in liver disease to improve the prognosis of patients living with chronic liver failure.

The Foundation has made pioneering efforts in conducting a series of large, international prospective studies that have been instrumental in reclassifying the trajectory of patients with chronic liver failure and led to the clinical, prognostic and pathophysiological definition of the syndrome referred to as “acute-on-chronic liver failure” characterized by acute decompensation of cirrhosis, severe systemic inflammation, organ failures, and high short-term mortality. We are inspiring best clinical practices for the management of patients with chronic liver failure and promoting a more sustainable and equitable healthcare system.

Within the EF CLIF, the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) Chair supports research activities through the EASL-CLIF Consortium, a network of 120 tertiary care and university hospitals in 28 European countries. The Grifols Chair promotes translational studies in centres across Europe and North America within the framework of the European Network for Translational Research (ENTR) with 21 centres in 7 countries. Over the last five years, EF CLIF has successfully expanded its geographical scope providing the context to support transcontinental collaborative research projects. The Global Projects chapter, which includes 96 centres in 22 countries, provides the framework to promote research in cirrhosis across the world with the aim to help to build consensus and ensure health equity worldwide.

Istituto Superiore de Sanitá (ISS) is the leading technical and scientific body of the Italian National Health Service and pursues the protection of public health by carrying out research, control, advisory, regulatory and training functions.

The main research activities of the ISS are distributed in 6 Departments, 17 National Centres, 2 Reference Centres, 5 technical-scientific services and a Notified Body for the assessment of the suitability of medical devices. Within ISS, the National Transplant Centre (CNT) acts as the technical body of the Italian Ministry of Health. It was set up under Law 91 of 1999 and, as the National Competent Authority, coordinates all activities regarding procurement, donation, allocation and transplantation of organs; procurement, donation, banking and transplantation of tissues and cells including Medically Assisted Reproduction (MAR) activities; waiting lists of patients.

Centro Nazionale Trapianti (CNT) manages the Transplant Information System, which collects activity data from donation to transplantation of OTC; manages national programs; prepares quality reports; defines protocols about safety and security of organ donation, criteria for organ and tissue allocation. It manages bilateral and multilateral agreements, and promotes information campaigns and training courses.

CNT will participate in all WPs of the LEOPARD project and support ESOT in WP1 activities related to the prospective collection of pre-LT data, including new variables with predictive value. Additionally, CNT is also in charge of the task related to implementing new pre-LT variables with independent predictive value in OSOs pre-LT data sets for large-scale routine collection and real-life validation of LEOPARD models.

The European Liver Patients Association (ELPA) was born out of the collective ambition of various European liver patient groups seeking to exchange their diverse experiences in managing liver diseases across different countries. In June 2004, a coalition of 13 patient groups from 10 European and Mediterranean Basin countries convened, leading to the establishment of ELPA. Its official inauguration took place in Paris on April 14th, 2005, coinciding with the annual conference of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL). Today, ELPA boasts a membership of over 30 groups from 25 countries, serving as a representative body for liver patients, their families, and volunteers.

ELPA’s role in the project is to represent patients’ perspectives and views. We are a crucial part of the communication and dissemination team making sure the project information and results are recognised by the general public and policymakers.

Ophiomics is a Portuguese clinical-stage Medtech SME company developing cutting-edge diagnostic products and services integrating bioinformatics, artificial intelligence and genomics in support of diagnostic, prognostic, treatment selection and clinical follow-up in oncology. It was funded by an H2020 call to develop HepatoPredict, an AI-based signature predictive of the recurrence of HCC after LT.

Ophiomics joined the LEOPARD project with several objectives: 1) to evaluate the applicability of the HepatoPredict tool to predict drop-out from the waiting list in HCC candidates enrolled in the LEOPARD prospective cohort, 2) to contribute to the development of an extension of the HepatoPredict approach relying on liquid biopsy, 3) to endorse the exploitation of OMICs signatures validated in the LEOPARD project.
